The Safety of Knowing I'm Loved
John and the other disciples were sitting around one evening with Jesus. The whole verse of John 13:23 is a stunning statement. John describes himself laying on the chest of Jesus, just listening to Him talk.
I’ve got to tell you - I can only name a handful of men I'd ever do that with. I've shaken hands, hugged, sat with, sat nearby, but never have I laid down my head on the chest of another man. There's just something too fragile, too vulnerable about that. Except for Him.
There was something about Jesus that allowed John to say, “I just want to be close to Him because He's the safest place in the world to me.”
Isn’t that beautiful? I want that in my relationship. I want to be able to experience that, figuratively, or however I can picture that in my own heart.
Then he goes on to describe himself as “the one whom Jesus loved.” It makes me chuckle - I honestly believe John was not sure that anyone else had a relationship with Jesus the way he did. What a beautiful picture. He said, “I know for sure that I'm the disciple whom Jesus loves. I’m not sure about Andrew, Philip, or Peter... But I am!”
When I experience the safety to know that I am, on my worst day, endlessly loved, it changes how I do life.
It makes me strong and safe and trustworthy. I'm not begging for acceptance. I'm not afraid. For I have Someone who I know loves me like no one else. It's true. No one has the relationship with Jesus Christ that I do. “I am John, the one whom Jesus loved.” Oh, how beautiful. And it’s true of you also. Wow, what a life! This life of trusting our relationship in Jesus Christ... there’s nothing better.
